How to Tether the Sony A7iii via WiFi - Firmware Update 4.0 (2021)

Recently Sony released an update to the Sony A7iii cameras, the firmware 4.0. It now includes the possibility of transferring files over FTP to an app or any FTP server you’d like.

This is specially useful not only for backup reasons while you’re shooting, but because it enables the possibility of a workaround to do tethering within Lightroom.

In the the video I go about step by step on how to:

1) Download and install the new firmware. The link to download is here

2) How to setup the FTP server. In our case we’re using Filezilla Server.

3) How to configure the camera itself

4) How to always have the same IP address

5) How to configure your firewall

6) Configuring Lightroom

And finally testing!

In my tests the images took around 20s from pressing the shutter till they were edited within Lightroom, which is quite reasonable if you’re doing a shoot in a studio with low movement subjects.
